Process Description

Backup and recovery for IT systems are complex operations, subject to failure if the configuration of any of the systems involved changes, or if the backups are not set up properly.  Without periodic recovery testing, no one can be certain that backups can actually be restored if they are needed for a real-world recovery.

MSP Module 07c, Recovery Testing, describes the process for planning and conducting recurring system restoration tests.  Based on testing objectives developed with the client, the testing scope and methodology are agreed upon ahead of time.  Once testing has been completed, remedial changes to both backup and recovery plans are reviewed with the client and implemented, improving the probability of a successful recovery in the event it is required.

The goals of this process are to:

  • Periodically validate that the client's systems can be restored from backup
  • Improve the probability of a successful recovery following a system failure
  • Correct deficiencies uncovered during testing to accelerate recovery in real-world recovery scenarios

At the onset of this process:

  • Backup Management service is live for this client
  • Backup Plan has been prepared for the client's systems
  • Recovery Plan has been completed and approved
  • A recovery test has been scheduled

Upon completion of this process:

  • Test results have been reviewed with the client
  • Backup Plan and Recovery Plan have been updated with findings from the recovery test
  • Changes to the backup management system have been initiated
  • Recommendations for backup system and service upgrades, based on test findings, have been provided to the client
  • Dates for the next recovery test have been identified
  • Target platform for recovery testing has been returned to pre-test configuration (if required)
